Event Recap: How Community Organisations Can Manage the Energy Crisis: Save & Green
On Tuesday, 16th July, En10ergy hosted a highly informative event at Muswell Hill Methodist Church titled “How Community Organisations Can Manage the Energy Crisis: Save & Green.” The event aimed at community buildings in Haringey was a great success, offering valuable insights into reducing energy costs and exploring sustainable energy solutions.
Event Highlights:
Opening Remarks: Brian Simpson, Property Steward at Muswell Hill Methodist Church, and En10ergy Director, welcomed attendees, highlighting the importance of community energy projects and the church’s achievements in energy savings with their solar PV panels, heat pumps, heating controls, monitoring equipment and rewilding project.
Energy Reduction Strategies: Dermot Barnes, Chair of En10ergy presented quick wins and retrofit measures for reducing energy demand, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of decarbonising old community buildings through insulation, ventilation, and building management systems.
Community Solar & LED Lighting: Nadia Smith, Project Development Officer at En10ergy explained community finance mechanisms and showcased successful solar and LED lighting projects in Greenwich West Community Centre in South London, highlighting cost/energy savings and wider social benefits of upgrading.
Tour of Solar Installation, Inverter and Heat Pumps: Attendees toured Muswell Hill Methodist Church’s solar panel installations, gaining first-hand insights into the practicalities and benefits of solar energy, as well as passing by the all important inverter in the kitchen, and the air source heat pumps powering a meeting room.
Financial Tips: Beth Kay, VCS Capacity Building Manager at Haringey Community Collaborative shared valuable tips on negotiating energy tariffs, available grants, and financing mechanisms, in addition to a brand new grant finder web platform, for the voluntary and community sector.
En10ergy’s Mission: Cara Jenkinson, Vice Chair of En10ergy outlined the organization’s goals, completed projects, and community fund activities, encouraging further community involvement.
Closing Remarks: Sydney Charles, Vice Chair of En10ergy concluded the event, summarizing the key learnings and encouraging community organizations to engage with En10ergy for future projects. The session ended on a positive note, with attendees feeling empowered and equipped to make impactful energy-saving changes & pursue community energy projects at their respective community buildings.
Networking and Engagement:
The event also provided ample networking opportunities, allowing community building leaders, business managers, and facilities caretakers to connect and share experiences. The Question and Answer sessions generated numerous actionable ideas, contributing to a collective effort in tackling the energy crisis.
